Taurine, Caffeine, and What Each One Does Alone
Taurine and caffeine get bottled together so often that most people have never seen them measured apart. This 2025 analysis pulled them apart on purpose, and the result is not the one a taurine seller would pick.
The pairing did well. Taurine on its own did not clearly separate from anything.
THE STUDY
- Title: Caffeine and taurine: a systematic review and network meta-analysis of their individual and combined effects on physical capacity, cognitive function, and physiological markers
- Journal: Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition, 2025
- Authors: Deng H, Wang L, Liu P, Bin Naharudin MN, Fan X, of University Malaya and Shanghai Ocean University
- Design: Systematic review and Bayesian arm based multilevel network meta analysis, with SUCRA ranking
- Read it: PubMed 41032459
WHO WAS IN IT
Twelve studies, pulled from five databases searched through 25 July 2025. Eight covered physical capacity, seven blood lactate, and six each covered cognitive function, heart rate, and rating of perceived exertion.
The abstract does not report a total number of participants across those twelve studies, so we are not going to give you one.
WHAT THEY TOOK
Caffeine alone, taurine alone, or the two together. The whole point of a network meta analysis is that it can compare arms that were never tested head to head in a single trial, which is how you get at a question like "is the combination doing something neither one does alone."
WHAT THEY FOUND
- The combination was the winner. Caffeine plus taurine showed a credible positive effect on anaerobic capacity (g = 0.46, 95% credible interval 0.19 to 0.71) and on reaction time (g = 0.75, 95% CrI 0.29 to 1.18), compared with either compound alone
- Caffeine alone produced the largest drop in perceived exertion (g = -0.64, 95% CrI -1.20 to -0.10)
- Taurine alone showed what the authors call "a possible tendency toward reducing" blood lactate (g = -0.30, 95% CrI -1.01 to 0.42)
- Heart rate: no credible differences across any condition
- Aerobic performance and the physiological measures were variable and, in the authors' words, "appeared to be context-dependent"
WHAT IT DOES NOT SHOW
- Taurine alone did not land a credible effect on anything here. Look at that lactate interval: -1.01 to 0.42. It contains no effect, and it contains an effect in the opposite direction. The authors wrote "possible tendency" and that is the honest ceiling on it
- The headline belongs to the combination, and we do not sell caffeine. Nothing in this analysis transfers to a caffeine free product by itself
- Twelve studies is a small evidence base for a network meta analysis, and the individual outcome domains rest on six to eight studies each
- These are exercise outcomes. Anaerobic capacity, lactate and perceived exertion are measured around training. This says nothing about taking taurine on an ordinary day
- Funding: the authors reported no conflict of interest
WHY IT IS ON THIS SHELF
Because we put taurine in the formula, and this is the cleanest recent attempt to ask what taurine does when you take the caffeine away. The answer this analysis gives is: not much that it could measure with confidence.
We would rather you read that here than not read it at all. Each four gummy serving of Vybrance Labs creatine gummies carries 500mg of taurine alongside 5g of creatine monohydrate and 120mcg of vitamin B12. The creatine is the part of that formula with the deepest evidence behind it, and the entries on this shelf will keep saying so as long as it stays true.
The Lab digs into the caffeine question separately in creatine and caffeine, complementary stack or competing habits.
see you in the wild!
