How to Read a Creatine Label: Third-Party Testing, Fillers, and What "Pure" Means

I have read more supplement panels than I ever expected to, mostly while building our own label and finding out how many real decisions get made in six-point type on the back of a bag.

What that taught me: almost nothing on the front is regulated the way shoppers assume, and almost everything you need is on the back. Here is a walkthrough you can run on any brand, including ours.

What is the first thing to check on a creatine label?

Check the serving size and the servings per container before anything else, because every number on a supplement facts panel is stated per serving, and the front of the package rarely says how many gummies, scoops, or capsules that is.

A big "5G CREATINE" is a per-serving claim, and whether that serving is one scoop, two gummies, or three capsules lives on the back. Serving sizes legitimately differ across formats, so the front of the bag is an incomplete sentence and the panel finishes it.

Servings per container turns a price into a cost per day. Sixty pieces sounds generous until you read that it is twenty servings. Ours, on a real product: 4 gummies per serving, 120 gummies per bag, so 30 servings, one month. At $49 that is about $1.63 a day, and at $39 on subscription, $1.30.

How much creatine am I actually getting per serving?

Find creatine monohydrate listed by name with its own amount in grams per serving, then compare that number to 5g, the dose used in most of the research.

If the panel says 5g, you are at the research standard. If it says 1.5g, that is not a scandal, it is a different product, and you should know before you compare prices. Where the number comes from is in the 5g question, answered. Muscle stores saturate in roughly three to four weeks at 5g a day, or about a week if you front-load with around 20g a day for five to seven days. Loading is optional.

What is a proprietary blend on a supplement label?

A proprietary blend lists the combined weight of several ingredients as one number instead of each ingredient's amount, so you can see what is in the product but not how much of anything.

Ingredients inside a blend appear in descending order by weight, and that is the only quantitative information you get. If a 6g blend leads with creatine monohydrate, the creatine could be 5.5g of it or 3g of it.

Blends have real uses, and flavor systems are genuine intellectual property. Creatine monohydrate is the easy one to break out, though, because its effective dose has been public for decades, so a brand can print the exact gram figure and lose nothing by doing it.

What are "other ingredients" and do they matter?

"Other ingredients" is everything in a product that is not a dosed active, including sweeteners, gelling agents, colors, acids, and coatings, and it is where allergens, dyes, and sugar alcohols appear.

People call these fillers. Most of them have a job: a gummy has to gel, taste like something, and survive a hot mailbox.

  • The gelling agent. Pectin is plant-derived, gelatin is animal-derived, and that line decides whether a gummy is vegan.
  • The sweetener system. Cane sugar, stevia, monk fruit, or a sugar alcohol such as xylitol, often in combination.
  • The color. Fruit and vegetable concentrates behave differently than synthetic dyes, and both are named here.
  • The coatings and acids. Citric acid, carnauba wax, coconut oil, doing tartness and anti-stick.

Ours, plainly. Vybrance Labs creatine gummies are vegan and gelatin-free, sugar-free, gluten-free, non-GMO, colored without artificial dyes, and sweetened with organic stevia and xylitol. Xylitol is a sugar alcohol. It is on our panel because it is in our formula, and I would rather you hear that from me.

One safety note that travels with that ingredient: xylitol is toxic to dogs. Keep the bag sealed and away from pets, same as any xylitol-sweetened product in your kitchen.

What is the difference between cGMP, third-party testing, and a certificate of analysis?

cGMP describes how a product is manufactured, third-party testing describes whether an independent lab checked what ended up in the bag, and a certificate of analysis is the document that proves it for one specific lot.

  • cGMP is a process standard for sanitation, documentation, and quality control at the facility. It says the kitchen is run properly, not what is in your bag.
  • Third-party tested means an outside lab ran an analysis, and the scope varies. Identity, potency, heavy metals, and microbials are separate tests, so the phrase alone is a headline, not a result.
  • A certificate of analysis is the paperwork, tied to a lot code, and the only one of the three that answers "what is in this bag."

So find the lot number on your package and ask the brand for that lot's COA. A company that tests will have it. Send us that request too, and here is exactly what comes back: if we hold a third-party COA covering your lot, you get it, and if we do not, I will tell you so plainly rather than hand you paperwork for some other lot. Today that paperwork covers one lot, not the whole catalog. That is the honest state of it, and it is the same straight answer I am telling you to demand from everyone else.

Do "pure," "clinical," and "premium" mean anything?

"Pure," "clinically dosed," "premium," and "pharmaceutical grade" have no legal definitions in the US supplement market and no required proof behind them.

They are not lies exactly. They are unfalsifiable. Treat them as tone, not information, and go find the number they are standing in front of.

A named branded ingredient is different, because it points at something checkable. Creapure, for example, is a good creatine monohydrate made by AlzChem in Germany, with a real manufacturer behind the name. That is the difference between a name you can look up and a borrowed word doing work it has not earned.

What does each phrase on the label actually mean?

Nearly every phrase on a supplement package is one of three things: a number you can verify, a process claim you can ask about, or a marketing word with no definition.

What is the checklist I can use on any brand, including yours?

Run eight checks on any creatine label, in this order: serving size, servings per container, grams of creatine monohydrate per serving, whether anything is buried in a proprietary blend, the full other-ingredients line, who tested it and for what, where it is manufactured, and cost per serving.

  1. Serving size. How many pieces or scoops is one serving?
  2. Servings per container. Not pieces. Servings.
  3. Creatine monohydrate in grams per serving. Compare to 5g.
  4. Blends. If there is one, is the creatine amount still broken out?
  5. Other ingredients. Read the entire line once, start to finish.
  6. Testing. By whom, for what, and can you get your lot's COA?
  7. Manufacturing. Made where, and in a cGMP facility?
  8. Cost per serving. Price divided by servings, then compared across formats like gummies and powder.

That facility holds a current NSF/ANSI 455-2 certification from NSF International, an independent certifier, not us grading ourselves. The finished product has been tested by an independent lab, Eurofins, for creatine, taurine, and B12, plus heavy metals and microbials, on one lot so far. Does a bigger creatine number on the front mean a better product?

Not by itself. 5g a day is the research standard, and going higher mostly means finishing the container faster.

Is creatine monohydrate better than other forms?

Monohydrate is the most studied form by a wide margin and it is what nearly all the research uses, which is why it is the benchmark. Other forms exist, with far less data behind them.

Why does creatine raise creatinine on a blood test?

Creatine supplementation raises serum creatinine, a lab marker, without that increase indicating kidney damage. It is frequently misread, so mention that you supplement before bloodwork, and talk any flagged result through with your doctor. How can creatine be vegan if it comes from meat?

Supplemental creatine monohydrate is chemically synthesized from sarcosine and cyanamide, not extracted from animals. That matters twice over if you eat plant-based, which we cover in the vegan and vegetarian guide.
