The Creatine and Brain Energy Glossary: Every Term, Defined Plainly

Energy terms
ATP (adenosine triphosphate)
ATP is the energy currency your cells spend to do work — every muscle contraction, every nerve signal, every thought. Your body does not store much of it. It makes ATP, spends it almost immediately, and rebuilds it continuously. Most of what people call "energy" is really a question about how fast ATP gets rebuilt.
Phosphocreatine
Phosphocreatine is the fast-access reserve your muscles and brain use to rebuild ATP during short, hard efforts. It donates a phosphate group to spent ATP, regenerating it in seconds. Bioenergetics

Mitochondria
Mitochondria are the structures inside your cells that produce most of your ATP. Tissues with high energy demand — muscle, heart, brain — carry more of them. "Mitochondrial health" is shorthand for how well that production line is running.

Creatine
Creatine is a compound your body makes from three amino acids and also gets from food, stored mostly in muscle as phosphocreatine. Your liver, kidneys, and pancreas produce roughly a gram a day. Creatine monohydrate
Creatine monohydrate is the specific form of creatine used in the overwhelming majority of published research, and the form with the strongest evidence behind it. It is chemically synthesized from sarcosine and cyanamide, which also means it is vegan — no animal is involved in making it.
Creatinine
Creatinine is a waste product of creatine breakdown, and it is used on bloodwork as a marker to estimate kidney function. This is the single most confused pair of words in the category. Taking creatine can raise your serum creatinine without indicating any kidney damage — it simply means there is more creatine in the system to break down. Tell your doctor you supplement before any blood draw.
Loading phase
A loading phase is taking roughly 20g of creatine per day, split into several doses, for five to seven days, to fill your stores faster. It is entirely optional. Saturation

Vitamin B12 (methylcobalamin)
Vitamin B12 is a nutrient required for nerve function, red blood cell formation, and energy metabolism, and methylcobalamin is a form the body can use directly. Deficiency is common among vegans and vegetarians, adults over 50, and people on certain long-term medications.
Taurine
Taurine is an amino acid that supports cellular hydration and concentrates in the brain, heart, retina, and muscle. Your body makes it, and dietary taurine comes mostly from meat, fish, and shellfish.
Myelin
Myelin is the fatty insulation wrapped around nerve fibers that lets electrical signals travel quickly and cleanly. B12 is required to build and maintain it, which is part of why B12 deficiency shows up as fog, tingling, and slowed thinking.
Xylitol
Xylitol is a sugar alcohol used as a sweetener, and it is an ingredient in our gummies. Worth knowing for two reasons: it is why the product is sugar-free without artificial sweeteners, and it is toxic to dogs. Keep the bag where your pets cannot reach it.
Body and aging terms
Sarcopenia
Sarcopenia is the age-related loss of muscle mass and strength that begins in midlife and accelerates without resistance training. Strength typically declines faster than size, and the fast-twitch fibers go first. More in creatine after 50.
Anabolic resistance
Anabolic resistance is when older muscle responds less strongly to the same amount of protein and the same training stimulus it used to answer readily. It is why protein distribution across meals matters more with age, not just total protein.
Eccentric loading
Eccentric loading is when a muscle produces force while lengthening, such as your quads controlling every step on a descent. It causes far more microdamage than the shortening contractions of climbing, which is why going down a mountain wrecks you more than going up.
DOMS (delayed onset muscle soreness)
DOMS is muscle soreness that peaks roughly 24 to 72 hours after unfamiliar or eccentric-heavy effort. It reflects mechanical damage and repair, not lactic acid, and it is why you can feel fine at the trailhead and terrible on Tuesday.
PMOS (Polycystic Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome)
PMOS is the new name being adopted for PCOS, and the added "metabolic" names the condition's root: how the body produces and uses energy. That reframing is why creatine entered a conversation it was previously absent from — see the PMOS rename.
Perimenopause
Perimenopause is the transition period before menopause when hormones fluctuate, often lasting several years, and it typically begins in the mid-thirties to forties. Fatigue, brain fog, and slower recovery often show up here, well before periods stop.
Insulin resistance
Insulin resistance is when cells respond less effectively to insulin, making it harder to move glucose out of the bloodstream and into tissue. When it affects glucose transport into the brain, the result feels like fog rather than hunger.
Label and quality terms
cGMP (current Good Manufacturing Practice)
cGMP is an FDA-enforced set of manufacturing standards covering facility cleanliness, process control, and record-keeping. It describes how a product is made. It does not verify what ended up in the bottle — that is what third-party testing is for.
Third-party testing
Third-party testing is independent lab verification that a product actually contains what the label claims and is free of specified contaminants. "Made in a cGMP facility" and "third-party tested" are different claims, and a brand should be able to tell you which it means.
Proprietary blend
A proprietary blend lists several ingredients under one combined weight, so you cannot tell how much of each you are getting. Sometimes it protects a genuine formulation. Often it hides an underdosed ingredient behind an impressive-sounding name.
Bioavailability
Bioavailability is how much of an ingredient actually reaches your bloodstream in a usable form. It is a real concept and also a heavily marketed one — a form can be more soluble in a glass without producing better outcomes in a body.
Research terms
Blinded study
A blinded study is one where participants do not know whether they received the real treatment or a placebo, which controls for expectation. Double-blinded means the researchers do not know either, which controls for their expectations too.
Association vs. causation
An association means two things move together in data; causation means one produces the other. Most nutrition headlines report associations and get read as causation. When we say "research suggests," we usually mean the evidence is real but does not yet establish cause.
Clinical dose
A clinical dose is the amount actually used in published research, as opposed to whatever amount a product happens to contain. For creatine monohydrate that is 5g per day — the number you should look for on any panel, including ours.
