Trail Energy, Part 1: Why You Hit a Wall on the Trail (Hiker's Fatigue, Explained)

Every month we hike Onion Creek with the Vybrance community, and every month the same thing happens somewhere around the halfway point: the conversation gets quieter. Legs get heavier. Somebody jokes about the parking lot.

That's the wall. Hikers call it bonking, runners call it hitting the wall — and it's not a willpower problem. It's an energy-supply problem.

Why do hikers hit a wall?

You hit a wall when your muscles' demand for ATP — the energy currency cells spend to contract — outpaces your body's ability to resupply it. Three systems are involved: quick phosphocreatine energy for surges (that scramble up the rock face), glycogen for the sustained miles, and fat for the long haul. When the fast systems run low and resupply lags, output drops — fast.

Terrain makes it worse. Hills, uneven footing, heat (hi, Texas), and a loaded pack all raise the ATP bill per step.

Where creatine fits for hikers

Creatine is the backbone of that first system. Your muscles store it as phosphocreatine and use it to regenerate ATP on demand — exactly the kind of repeated, short-burst effort that climbs and scrambles demand.
