Benefits of Creatine for Women: What New Research Reveals

Despite that interest, most clinical creatine research has historically been done on men, leaving a real gap in understanding how women use it and what they get out of it. This new survey is a first attempt to close the "how women use it" half of that gap.

What did the new study find?

A cross-sectional survey published in Nutrients (September 2026) looked at 2,094 current or recent creatine users, 1,055 women and 1,039 men, with an average age of 53, recruited through the supplement-tracking platform SuppCo. Four patterns stood out.

1. Women are newer to creatine

Women made up 50 to 64% of respondents in every duration group under three years of use, but only about 20% of the group that had used creatine for three or more years. After adjusting for age, the odds of a respondent being a woman were roughly four to seven and a half times higher in every shorter-duration group than in the three-plus-year group. The authors read that as a wave of newer female users arriving.

2. Healthy aging is the top motivator, not just performance

Women were less likely than men to cite athletic performance as their reason for taking creatine (an adjusted 37.5% of women vs. 50.2% of men) and more likely to cite healthy aging. The authors describe this as a gap between how creatine is actually being used and where the existing research has focused.

3. Knowledge grows with time, and so does a confidence gap

Women who had used creatine longer scored higher on a five-item creatine knowledge check, mainly because they were less uncertain, not because newer users believed more myths. Myth endorsement stayed rare in every group. The more interesting finding: at the same knowledge score, women rated their own confidence lower than men did, and the gap widened as scores went up. 4. Women learn about creatine differently

Six of the seven information sources the survey asked about differed by sex. Women were more likely to first hear about creatine through healthcare providers, podcasts, and social media. Men more often cited YouTube, research articles, or friends and family. What does this mean in practice for women?

This study measured usage patterns. It did not test outcomes, so it cannot tell you what creatine does for a woman's body. What it does show is where women's interest sits, and that lines up with the areas researchers are actively studying:

Honest limits: what this survey cannot tell you

  • It is a survey, not a trial. Nobody took creatine under observation. Every answer is self-reported.
  • Convenience sample. Respondents were users of one supplement-tracking app who chose to answer, with a response rate the authors put at roughly 2%. They may not look like creatine users in general.
  • Cross-sectional. It compared people at different durations of use at one point in time. It did not follow the same women over years, so "knowledge grows with time" is an inference, not an observation.
