Creatine Before, During, or After: Eleven Men, Five Conditions
Eleven men. One dose of creatine, taken either two hours before lifting, during the session, or straight after. Only the men who took it beforehand lifted more, and the authors of the study are the first to tell you the finding is exploratory.
This is a small pilot trial, and we are posting it because the question it asks is the one we get asked most: does it matter when you take it?

WHO WAS IN IT
Eleven physically active men, mean age 26.09 years, mean body mass 83.20 kg. Every man completed all five conditions, so each served as his own control.
They were screened tightly. Non smokers, no alcohol and no anti inflammatory medication during the study or for the month before it, free from musculoskeletal injury, and stable on a daily recovery questionnaire for three consecutive days. Anyone who had taken creatine in the previous four weeks was excluded, as was anyone following a vegetarian diet or carrying a kidney or liver disorder.
WHAT THEY TOOK
Participants in this trial were given creatine monohydrate at 0.1 grams per kilogram of bodyweight, or a matching placebo, dissolved in 500 mL of water. For the average man in this study at 83.20 kg that works out to roughly 8.3 grams, which is our arithmetic and not a number the paper prints.
The five conditions were: creatine two hours before the session as a single bolus, creatine spread evenly across the session, creatine after the session, placebo, and a no supplement control. Each session was bench press and back squat, six sets each at 80 percent of one rep max, scored as the total external load lifted. A seven day washout separated every condition.
Note what this is not. There was no loading phase and no daily supplementation. This is a single dose, five times over, in men who had been creatine free for a month.
WHAT THEY FOUND
- Bench press: a significant main effect of condition, F = 4.91, partial eta squared = 0.33, p = 0.035
- Back squat: a much stronger effect, F = 33.22, partial eta squared = 0.77, p < 0.001
- The before condition was the one that moved, outperforming both placebo and the no supplement control, p < 0.05
- Creatine kinase, a marker of muscle damage, differed by condition, chi squared (4) = 12.22, p = 0.016, and was higher when creatine was taken after training than in the control, p = 0.013, or on placebo, p = 0.041
- Creatinine differed by condition, chi squared (4) = 17.75, p = 0.001, and was lower in the before condition than during, p = 0.033, after, p = 0.003, or control, p = 0.021
- Nothing else moved. Countermovement jump, cognitive performance on a digit cancellation test, mood, perceived exertion, perceived recovery and muscle soreness were all unchanged across every condition
WHAT IT DOES NOT SHOW
- The authors call it exploratory themselves. Their conclusion says the findings "are exploratory and have to be confirmed with a higher sample size and robust placebo/control structures." That is the research team telling you this is a starting point, not an answer
- Eleven men. Physically active, average age 26, all male. No women, no older adults, nobody in the life stage most of our readers are in. Nothing here transfers to a 48 year old woman by assumption
- The washout may not have been long enough, and the authors say so. They used seven days between conditions, then note in their own discussion that full normalization of intramuscular creatine stores "may require four to six weeks following cessation." If creatine was still carrying over between conditions, the comparison between the five arms is muddier than it looks
- One day is not a training programme. This measured a single session. It says nothing about whether taking creatine before your workout every day for twelve weeks builds more muscle than taking it after, which is the question people actually mean when they ask about timing
- The brain results are a null, and the authors offer a reason. Cognitive performance did not change, and they suggest participants may already have had high baseline creatine stores. A null in eleven people is weak evidence either way
- Blood markers moved in directions this study cannot interpret. Creatine kinase and creatinine both shifted, but in an acute single dose design with eleven people these are observations, not safety findings and not performance findings
- Funding and conflicts: the paper states "This research received no external funding" and the authors declare no conflicts of interest
WHY IT IS ON THIS SHELF
Because timing is the question we hear more than any other, and the honest answer has always been that the evidence is thin. This trial does not make it thick. What it does is put a number on one narrow version of the question and then tell you plainly how much weight that number will bear.
It is also worth reading next to the 64 adult trial we posted last week, which asked whether creatine does anything without the workout at all. Between the two, the pattern is that creatine and training keep turning out to be a package, and the details of when you take it matter far less than whether you take it at all.
