Taurine at 6 mg/kg: Twenty Wrestlers, One Acute Dose

Twenty elite wrestlers. One dose of taurine, sixty minutes before testing. Peak power came out 16.76 percent higher than the same men doing the same warm-up on a placebo.

Two things make this one worth posting even though the men in it are nothing like most of our readers. It is a rare taurine trial that actually isolates taurine. And it used a dose that, for the first time on this shelf, is close to the amount in our own serving.

WHO WAS IN IT

Twenty highly trained male wrestlers, all with at least ten years of training experience and results at national or international level. Every man completed all three conditions, so each served as his own control.

One oddity to flag, because this shelf reads the whole paper rather than the abstract. The paper prints two different sets of baseline numbers for the same twenty men. The methods section gives a mean age of 22.5 years and mean body mass of 76.4 kg; the results section and Table 1 give 23.9 years and 77.5 kg. We cannot reconcile that from the published record, so we are showing you both rather than picking the one we prefer.

WHAT THEY TOOK

Participants in this trial were given taurine at 6 mg per kilogram of bodyweight, or an equal 6 mg per kilogram of sucrose as placebo, taken 60 minutes before testing because plasma taurine peaks around the hour mark.

That dose is the reason this entry exists. For the average man in this trial at 77.5 kg, 6 mg/kg works out to roughly 465 mg, which is our arithmetic and not a number the paper prints. Most taurine performance research uses one to six grams. This is the first study on this shelf to test taurine in the range a normal supplement serving actually delivers.

The three conditions were: control with no supplement and no warm-up protocol, the PAPE warm-up plus placebo, and the PAPE warm-up plus taurine. The PAPE protocol itself was three sets of eight reps of squats and hip thrusts at 85 percent of one rep max. Because the placebo arm and the taurine arm both did that warm-up, the difference between them is taurine and nothing else, which is exactly what the other taurine papers on this shelf could not give us.

WHAT THEY FOUND

  • Peak power: 1191.95 W with taurine against 1020.25 W on placebo and 994.85 W in the control condition, a 16.76 percent difference, p = 0.048
  • Peak power relative to bodyweight: 14.73 W/kg against 12.05 and 11.65, a 22.24 percent difference, p = 0.028
  • Average power: 659.11 W against 642.40 and 638.85, a 2.64 percent difference that did not reach significance, p = 0.214
  • Blood lactate after testing was lower in the taurine condition, p < 0.05, and countermovement jump performance after exercise was better, p < 0.05
  • Perceived exertion did not budge. RPE was similar across all three conditions, F = 1.453, p = 0.455. The work did not feel any easier
  • Tolerance: gastrointestinal symptoms measured 24 hours later showed no difference between taurine and placebo, p > 0.05

WHAT IT DOES NOT SHOW

  • The headline percentages are descriptive, by the authors' own statement. They write that the 16.76 and 22.24 percent figures are "presented as complementary context to the statistically verified differences." That is the research team telling you the percentages are illustration, not the result
  • Peak power moved and average power did not. Average power over the full test came in at p = 0.214. A supplement that lifts your single best instant but not your sustained output across thirty seconds is a narrower finding than "improves anaerobic performance" sounds
  • Both p values sit just inside the line. 0.048 and 0.028, in twenty people. That is a signal, not a settled fact
  • The statistics in the table do not move together the way you would expect. Peak power is printed with a larger F value than peak power per kilogram (2.745 against 1.515) yet a larger p value as well (0.048 against 0.028). We cannot reconcile those from the published record, and we would rather say so than quietly quote only the numbers that suit us
  • The baseline table disagrees with the methods section, as noted above. Two ages, two body masses, same twenty men
  • One dose, one day. This is an acute study. It says nothing about taking taurine daily, which is how anyone actually takes it, including our customers
  • Twenty elite male wrestlers. No women, no beginners, no ordinary adults, and a training history most people reading this do not have. Nothing here transfers to a hike or a work day by assumption
  • We have no trial registration to point you to. The paper reports ethics approval from the Ataturk University Ethics Committee but we found no clinical trial registry ID in the record
  • Funding: the work was supported by the Ataturk University Scientific Research Projects Coordination Unit, project code TKP-2024-13927. The authors reported no conflict of interest

WHY IT IS ON THIS SHELF

Because the honest problem with taurine research has been that taurine is almost never tested by itself. The 2025 network meta analysis we posted found the caffeine and taurine pairing did well while taurine alone landed no credible effect on anything it measured. This trial is the cleaner comparison, because the placebo group did the identical warm-up and the only difference between the two arms was the amino acid.

That is the closest any study on this shelf has come to the amount we put in the bag, and it is worth being precise about what that does and does not mean: a matching dose is not evidence of a matching result. They were elite athletes taking one dose an hour before a Wingate test. That is not a Tuesday.

The creatine in that formula still carries far more evidence behind it than the taurine does, and these entries will keep saying so for as long as it stays true. What changed this week is only that taurine finally got measured on its own, at a sane dose, in people who were not sick.
